5 Day Tour – Highlights of Wales

This is our most popular tour of Wales for international visitors who choose to visit Britain and want to see and explore Wales. The tour itinerary is flexible to start from either Chester or Cardiff and provides an extensive tour through the three National Parks, Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire, the Brecon Beacons, along with snippets of the Isle of Anglesey and other Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty that make up Wales. Wales provides an amazing history, along with a unique culture and some of the best scenery in Britain. Our five day tour captures some of the best highlights of Wales without having to back track across ground already travelled! We’ll introduce you to hidden gems and some fantastic photographic locations. Enjoy touring along the ‘Back Roads of Wales’ and discover the ‘Real Wales’ with Boutique Tours of Wales. Each touring day offers a variety of interesting content.

Step into medieval history with visits to the medieval walled town of Conwy.  Conwy’s town walls are said to be the best preserved in all of Europe and one of the best ways to see the town is by walking the walls.  At Caernarfon you can walk in the footsteps of royalty at the castle where Her Majesty the Queen invested a young Prince Charles as ‘The Prince of Wales’ , a tradition that was started by King Edward 1st back in the 13th century.

We leave mainland Britain to make a short visit to the Isle of Anglesey and no visit to Wales is complete until you’ve visited the famous town with the longest name in Europe.  Nearby we enjoy beautiful views of the famous Thomas Telford suspension bridge.

Our tour through the Snowdonia National Park captures beautiful glacial lake locations and stunning mountain passes.  We tour along the most scenic road in Wales with views of the biggest mountain in Wales – Mount Snowdon.  We’ll make a visit to a Slate Quarry and we also call into the ‘prettiest’ village in Wales, set around small rivers.  Our final stop is a visit to a traditional 18th century Welsh Farmhouse, where you can discover the real culture of Wales in a wonderful setting.

Todays tour works our way through Southern Snowdonia with options to appeal to everyone.

During the morning you can choose from two tour options

Tour Option A:   Wales is full of legends, myths and great stories.  Some say King Arthur and his Knights are still hiding asleep in a cave somewhere in Snowdonia, where when they wake, they will once again defend Britain against an invading enemy!  So step aboard your boat on a tour underground, where your hooded boatman guides you through a labyrinth of underground tunnels through an old slate mine.  You’ll sail through a cascading veil of an underground waterfall and discover a magical place where tales from the mists of time are retold. Tales of dragons, giants and the legendary King Arthur himself.

Afterwards we head for Aberystwyth where you can ride the unique cliff railway for a stunning view from the top of Constitution Hill of the Cambrian Coast.

Tour Option B:  Further south there is the opportunity to experience one of the Great Little Steam trains of Wales.  All aboard for a stunning scenic steam railway journey through ancient woodlands to Devil’s Bridge, home of the famous waterfalls, nestled in the magnificent Cambrian Mountains.  The Vale of Rheidol Railway re-creates the Edwardian spirit of adventure aboard one of the restored steam trains for a stunning journey along the Rheidol Valley.  Afterwards there’s time to visit the waterfalls before making our way across country to the coast.

Both tour options make it to the pretty Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron and further along the coast we pull in to visit the resort town of New Quay. Later on you’ll step back to the ancient history of Wales with a visit to the largest and best preserved Neolithic Dolmen in Wales, dating from around 3500 BC.  Our coastal forage also captures the town of Fishguard.  To round off a spectacular touring day we head for the beach and cliffs of the Pembrokeshire coast to visit a hidden gem – the Blue Lagoon.

Our tour highlights of the Cambrian Coast and Hills features:

  • King Arthur’s Labarynth and the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway
  • or the Vale of Rheidol Railway and Devils’ Bridge Waterfalls
  • Aberaeron
  • Newquay
  • Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber
  • Fishguard
  • The Blue Lagoon

Today we tour across the south west corner of Wales covering the stunning Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park.  St Davids is the smallest city in Britain and is no bigger than the size of a village!  This is Wales’ spiritual home, with its magnificent Cathedral and the remains of the Bishop’s Palace.

There are two options to choose from in the morning:

Option A:  Take to the water on a 90 minute boat ride around Ramsey Island and witness the ocean wildlife.

Option B:  Take a short walk along the spectacular Pembrokeshire Coastal path.

Whichever option you choose, you are amongst some of the most natural and unspoilt landscapes in Europe!

Afterwards we go onto visit Solva, a beautiful inland fjord setting and in contrast the beautiful expanse of sandy beaches run across St Brides Bay.  At Pembroke you have an appointment with a king and a royal photo call with Henry VII himself.  We then uncover more remote sections of the Pembrokeshire with some stunning hidden gems with the famous ‘Green Bridge of Wales’ and the unique St Govan’s Chapel.  You’ll also get to discover one of the top beaches in Britain with a cliff top walk and the touring day is complemented with a short visit to the popular resort town of Tenby with its beautiful harbour and cliff top setting overlooking golden stretches of sandy beaches.

The Brecon Beacon National Park is land locked and our scenic touring day captures the most amazing scenic regions of the Park area.  We’ll tour across remote moorlands along single track roads amongst herds of grazing sheep looking for the wild ponies. The day also features some medieval history with a visit to one of the most scenic and remote castles in Wales, along with one of the earliest castles built in the Welsh Marches.

We’ll step further back in time to discover life living on a Crannog.  One of the highlights of the day is visiting the second hand bookshop capital of the world, Hay-on-Wye.  Afterwards, we’ll get to tour you on old ancient single track roads literally just wide enough for our vehicle to fit and you are rewarded with touring along the highest road in Wales, where we are amongst the most stunning rolling countryside and towered by the border Black Mountains of Wales.  As we descend from the heights we tour along the Vale (valley) of Ewyas, which features a beautiful picturesque chapel, a ruined Augustinian Priory and the leaning medieval church.  The day is rounded off an optional stop at the oldest inn in Wales before dropping off at your chosen accommodation for the evening.

Tour Testimonial and Endorsement

“The ultimate professional tour”

Six active senior adults spent an amazing tour conducted with John (Boutique Tours) touring in his beloved Wales. Our trip was personalized to perfection with comfort and style, not to mention an impeccably clean vehicle.

John’s passion for his country and his work is reflected in everything he does. He was very organized, yet flexible. His wealth of knowledge is abounding which afforded us so many fabulous opportunities and experiences. Our tour was rich in history and culture, scenic hikes (amazing scenery and photo opportunities), and lots of hidden gems - no stone left unturned, and, of course, wonderful restaurants.

We had a general itinerary and he was able to fine-tune it with a plethora of great ideas. We trusted his judgment and appreciated his work ethic. He never hesitated to make lunch or dinner reservations or offer B&B suggestions. His engaging personality, brilliant sense of humor, high-energy and fun-loving spirit added a richness to our experience, well beyond our expectations.
